project, led by Mexican-North American doctor Marta Alarc\u00f3n Riquelme, director of the Granada-based Genyo center.<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>&#8220;About 30-40% of patients have a poor response to existing treatments today,&#8221; acknowledges Dr. Alarc\u00f3n Riquelme, who will give more details of the &#8220;3TR&#8221; project at the &#8220;BioMed &amp; Tech Talks&#8221; (April 8-11) in Granada, coinciding with the day and the World Health Week.<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>They specifically study seven diseases: asthma, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn&#8217;s disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and systemic lupus erythematosus.<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>The &#8220;3TR&#8221; project is the largest European project among the Innovative Medicines Initiatives and is endowed with 80 million euros, half of which is paid by the European Union and the rest by the 69 partners and pharmaceutical companies.<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Dr. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Marta Alarc\u00f3n Riquelme<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">, director of the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Genomics and Oncology Research Center (GENYO), <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">will be one of the main protagonists of the first edition of <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>&#8216;BioMed &amp;Tech Talks&#8217;: Your appointment with research and innovation<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">, which will be held <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>from April 8 to 11 <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">at the Granada Health Technology Park, coinciding with World Health Day and Week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>BioMed &amp;Tech Talks&#8217; <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">is <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>supported by the Progreso y Salud Foundation (FPS)<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">, of the Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs of the Andalusian Regional Government, and representatives of the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>World Health Organization (WHO), the European Commission, Farmaindustria, the Andalusian Health Service (SAS), the Spanish Association of Biocompanies (ASEBIO) and associations of health communicators, such as ANIS, AEC2 and Comunicabiotec, <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">have already confirmed their participation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Alarc\u00f3n Riquelme, a scientific eminence<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Born in Rochester, Minnesota (USA), of Mexican descent, she studied medicine at La Salle University (Mexico), and completed her doctoral studies at the Universities of Stockholm and Uppsala, in Sweden, where she is still a professor at the prestigious Karolinska Institute.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Dr. Marta Alarc\u00f3n has become an international reference in autoimmune pathologies, especially in <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>&#8220;systemic lupus erythematosus&#8221;<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">, a disease to which she has devoted many years of study.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7544 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/biomedandtechtalks.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Marta-Alarcon.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"436\" height=\"653\" srcset=\"https:\/\/biomedandtechtalks.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Marta-Alarcon.jpg 436w, https:\/\/biomedandtechtalks.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Marta-Alarcon-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 436px) 100vw, 436px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">She currently carries out this professional work in Granada as director of the GENYO center, where she develops and heads the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>&#8216;TR3 Project&#8217;<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">, the largest immunology project of the Innovative Medicines Initiative 2 (IMI2), a &#8220;European research project to improve the response to treatment in autoimmune, inflammatory and allergic diseases&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>GENYO Center, sponsored by the multinational Pfizer, the University of Granada and the Regional Government of Andalusia, <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>is the first national center dedicated to genomics <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">and conceived as a <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>space for research of excellence <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">on the genetic basis of diseases, as well as on the influence that genetic inheritance has on the body&#8217;s response to certain drugs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>The &#8216;3TR Project&#8217;, a major European challenge<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The &#8220;3TR&#8221; project is an ambitious research project that could change the way in which patients with immune-mediated diseases receive their treatments, since, as Dr. Alarc\u00f3n Riquelme acknowledges, &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>around 30-40% of patients have a poor response to the treatments that exist today&#8221;.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7546 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/biomedandtechtalks.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/iStock-935400828-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"684\" srcset=\"https:\/\/biomedandtechtalks.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/iStock-935400828-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/biomedandtechtalks.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/iStock-935400828-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/biomedandtechtalks.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/iStock-935400828-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/biomedandtechtalks.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/iStock-935400828-1536x1025.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/biomedandtechtalks.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/iStock-935400828-2048x1367.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">With just over 200 people involved in the project, it follows <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>more than 2,000 patients <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">whose samples will grow to 6,000 or 8,000, illustrating the magnitude of the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>research focused on seven diseases <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">such as <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, Crohn&#8217;s disease, ulcerative colitis, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">&#8220;What we are trying to answer is <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>what are the mechanisms behind that response and non-response to treatment<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">. Today we use a number of multi-omics technologies that are quite general. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>We try to study them on a large scale within various diseases to be able to understand those mechanisms behind the response and non-response to current treatments,&#8221; <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">explains the researcher.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">&#8220;What we are looking for is <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>why 30-40% of people do not get what their doctor prescribes,&#8221; <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">says Alarc\u00f3n Riquelme, who points out that &#8220;together with the Andalusian Biobank, patient samples are being processed to reach a sequencing point and, in this way, harmonize the whole process&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>The same treatment for different diseases?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>main objective <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">of Alarc\u00f3n Riquelme and the entire &#8216;3TR Project&#8217; team is to find the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>reasons why a patient does not respond to a given treatment and <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>determine whether the same treatment can be used to treat two different diseases: <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7548 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/biomedandtechtalks.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/iStock-1455260870-1024x621.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"621\" srcset=\"https:\/\/biomedandtechtalks.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/iStock-1455260870-1024x621.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/biomedandtechtalks.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/iStock-1455260870-300x182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/biomedandtechtalks.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/iStock-1455260870-768x466.jpg 768w, https:\/\/biomedandtechtalks.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/iStock-1455260870-1536x932.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/biomedandtechtalks.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/iStock-1455260870-2048x1243.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">&#8220;If I have a patient with a pulmonary disease, it may happen that there are pathogenic pathways that are shared with another and, therefore, patients with different diseases can receive the same treatment. This would help to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>carry out clinical trials in <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">which <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>patients with different diseases <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">can be included, to see which have the same pathogenic mechanism and to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>use the same treatment, regardless of the clinical diagnosis,<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">&#8221; she explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">A real challenge for which <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>new technologies or Artificial Intelligence <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">can facilitate the work or, at least, extend the field of action. &#8220;It is important because (AI) <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>allows us to work with models that help us diagnose and predict a series of things with a series of data that we can obtain without the need for a sample<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">. Inferences that help us create hypotheses and be able to help in everything related to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>personalized medicine <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">to be able to treat patients in the most appropriate way possible.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Innovative format for a high-level event<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Granada Health Technology Park <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">will host the first edition of <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>&#8216;BioMed&amp;Tech Talks&#8217;: Your appointment with research and innovation<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">, a new independent, transversal, international and multidisciplinary event that <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>from April 8 to 11, 2024<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">, coinciding with the World Health Day and Week, will give visibility to innovative projects in BioMedicine and BioTechnology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The agenda will include <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>two face-to-face sessions (Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 April) <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>two virtual sessions (10 and 11)<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">.
